Welcome to the Construction Island Blog

The purpose is this blog is to follow the planning and execution of a construction themed island for Victoria University's Faculty of Technical Trades and Innovation.

The general idea is to build a virtual environment where Construction Industries students can learn through play.

Below is draft map of one possible way the island could work, followed by some further details about the space.





A construction themed island in the Victoria University Second Life space featuring;

- Induction workshop. Signs/video showing how to interact with objects and the environment in Second Life. Students must pass a few simple tests(including putting on a hardhat etc) before they receive their vehicle and are allowed 'on site.' We need to discuss ways to incorporate real induction training tasks into this area. Uniforms, hardhats, safety vests, rules, safety videos etc...
- Self rezzing transportation for visitors/students to travel around the island in(perhaps forklifts/excavators or something in theme?)
- Structure examples, including footing, flooring, walls, roofs
- A house in several stages of construction (a replica of the normal ones built) which follow the correct sequence of a real build
- The 'house of symbols' some kind of obstacle course/mad house which has symbols, signs, and definitions which much be correctly identified to proceed.
- Ecological design area - or can this feature throughout?
- Design area - some top house designs from around the world
- A game show/quiz kind of show section. There are several scripts within Second Life which enable group based theme show type games to be played. Need to investigate possible ways this could be used more (both on slexchange and with Daniel).
- Reward system - prizes, utes etc?
- Sandbox
- Train track or similar that takes u for a guided tour

Students must work either alone of as a team to get through the maze before they can explore freely


The appearance of the area will be a run down, industrial, island with old factory type buildings dotted around it(textures from VU on nicholson/buckley perhaps?) with landscaped areas in between. From a distance it will look abandoned and wild, but upon entry there will defined paths and transportation which lead the students between areas.
One focus of the design will be to keep the students engaged in this space, making sure they don't want or need to travel to other areas of Second Life.

Required;

Land - we will need another island to be added to the one VU currently has, the nature of a few of these builds means they will take up a lot of 'prims' which are basically building blocks, and limited for each island. Our island would not need to take up the whole space (it would probably be around 150m X 150m floating in the middle of the space (which is 256m X 256m) however we would need all of the area's resources.

There are a lot of models already available which we can adapt for our own uses. We would need to sit down and go through checking what is relevant and how we can tweak some of them for our own purposes.

timer script from first door to last, based on hardhat perhaps? scoreboard at the end?

use chat to open doors, users must say the right letter 'eg, type 'a' then press enter' or they get a 10 second penalty before they can try again - questions and answers change each time
